Much is known about males in Nigerian prisons. Very little is known about females. Next to nothing is known about pregnant, nursing mothers and babies in Nigeria’s prisons. Yet records from the NPS in August, 2018 reveal a proven presence of 51 babies and some pregnant women in Nigeria’s prisons. “BORN & LOCKED UP” investigates the conditions that put them there, welfare arrangements in place for them, how well the Nigerian laws protect these minority groups and the realities of the Criminal Justice System. From the point of arrest, through the legal systems as well as the prisons where they end up, listen to how Nigeria’s criminal justice system affects a minority group: babies and children.
